“Our Danube” is a draft strategy for the National Port Development Master Plan, which aims, among other things, to increase the share of waterborne freight transport to 10 per cent from the current 3.3 per cent.

The 2030 document was produced by a consortium of Ex Ante Consulting Ltd. and Mahart Passnave Ltd. 85% of the € 1 million cost was funded by the European Union Network Financing Facility (CEF) and 15% by domestic sources.

Szávó Sztilkovics said that in addition to the strategy, the program included a feasibility study on the port of Komárom and 20 case studies on port development. Several of these projects will be submitted to the European Union at the beginning of next year through a grant application.

Zoltán Barna-Lázár, Managing Director of Ex Ante Ltd.., Representative of the consortium, emphasized that the strategy identified development objectives in five priority areas: (1) diversion of goods traffic to waterways, generating additional demand for the economic development and development of the water freight and port sector (2) through industrial relocation measures, the development of a financing system for the development of the sector (1) development of human resources – training and employment measures to meet the challenges of the 21st century and (4) developing a sustainable regulatory environment.

In the draft strategy, national, regional and operational ports were categorized; it has been proposed to improve accessibility to ports, including by rail and road links. It is also important to modernize the ports’ technology, digitalization, development of warehouse technology and the spread of green technologies – Zoltán Barna-Lázár told MTI.

According to Mahart’s announcement, an environmental review of the strategy is still ongoing, and its findings may still influence the final content.

At the side event of the conference, the newly procured Measuring Vessel was renamed Garda. The multi-jet head-sized gauge vessel, which was also procured from CEF source for the National Directorate General for Water, can provide a full view of the river. (MTI)
